Discover The Hidden Meaning of Your Name Using Numerology

This article was originally published in 2013. I am continuing to transfer my old Hubpages articles to here.

What is Numerology?

Numerology is a method of divination which requires no particular skill to practice, beyond basic maths. It requires no psychic ability. All you need is a piece of paper and a pen.

Numerology is also known as isopsephy. Isopsephy loosely translates from the Ancient Greek language as 'equal pebbles', as students then used pebbles arranged in patterns to learn maths and geometry.

Every letter of the Greek alphabet was assigned a numerical, mythological and symbolic value. Similar systems evolved with the Arabic and Latin alphabets so it seems unlikely that either system developed in isolation.

The system of numerology given below has allegedly been developed to correspond as accurately as possible with the English alphabet.

Did Pythagoras Invent Numerology?

The name of Pythagoras is forever associated with Ancient Greece. He was born some time around 570 BCC, on the Greek island of Samos. Much of the historical references to Pythagoras and his work were written long after he had already died.

However, most historians agree that Pythagoras travelled in search of knowledge, and the various origins of his ideas are given as Egyptian, Roman, Chaldean, Jewish, Phoenician, Magian (via Sumerian), with a dash of training from the Delphic Oracle herself. There were long-established trading routes between all these groups of people, so it is not impossible for this to have some basis in truth.

When he was around forty years old, he settled in Croton, Italy, where there was a Greek colony. There, he began to teach a philosophy which came to be known as the Pythagorean system of esoteric doctrine, a system made known only to those initiated into its secrets, in keeping with tradition. Its ideas are popularly believed to have influenced the much later Rosicrucian and Masonic traditions, and from Masonry to have passed into the Golden Dawn and from there into some contemporary neo-pagan religions.

Origins of this Numerology System

The method of numerology described on this Hubpage was handed to me on two sheets of A4 file paper by one of Thomas Joseph Walton's pupils. Both sides of one of these sheets are presented here, further down this page. Thomas Walton, or "T" as he was often known, was the leader of a small group of spiritual seekers who met in Liverpool throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His philosophy had many similarities with that of GI Gurdjieff.

The person who handed me these two sheets described this numerological system as the "Kabala of Pythagoras".

Numerology - How it Works

With this system of numerology, each letter of the Greek alphabet was interpreted as having a numerical value. Each letter was also believed to possess a mythological, Kabalistic and symbolical counterpart.

The Roman alphabet, which we use today, allegedly received as close a comparison to the Greek alphabet as was possible. It is advised that a purely phonetic spelling of names is used with this system.

Numerological Meaning of Names

A person's first name, or the name by which they are best known, is said to represent outer personality as well as hidden character traits.

A person's surname reveals their family inheritance and genetic influences.

How to Use this Numerological System

Write down your name, spelling it phonetically. Then using the list below, give each letter the correct number.

A Cure for Aging?

"All that we profess to do is but this, - to find out the secrets of the human frame; to know why the parts ossify and the blood stagnates, and to apply continual preventatives to the effort of time.  This is not magic; it is the art of medicine rightly understood.  In our order we hold most noble -, first, that knowledge which elevates the intellect; secondly, that which preserves the body.  But the mere art (extracted from the juices and simples) which recruits the animal vigour and arrests the progress of decay, or that more noble secret which I will only hint to thee at present, by which heat or calorific, as ye call it, being, as Heraclitus wisely taught, the primordial principle of life, can be made its perpectual renovator...." Remembering Richie Tattoo Artist's Studio

Richard in the street entrance to his tattoo studio in Liverpool. The vertical sign next to Richard is now in the Liverpool Tattoo Museum. Yesterday, my sister Evelyn, Richard and myself stood outside Richard's old tattoo studio and looked up at the few remaining signs, whose paint has now mostly flacked away to reveal bare wood. On the studio's window are stick-on letters which read, "Art", where once it boldly announced his presence as the city's only "Tattoo Artist".  I can remember him buying that simple plastic lettering from an old-fashioned printer's shop. This was in 1993, not long after he'd opened the studio and before he could afford better signs. After he'd patiently stuck them onto the glass we realised that from the outside the sign read "Artist Tattoo", so we had to carefully peel the letters off the window and have another go, laughing over having made such an obvious error yet worried in case we spoiled the letteri...

Dear Diary...

Do you keep a diary? Why did you start it, and, if you started one then stopped, why was that? What sort of things do (or did) you write about? I ask as, as a long-time diarist myself, there is an interesting piece in The Guardian today which talks about one woman's diary habit, which she began at the age of fourteen. I started a diary around that age too, but destroyed it after my mother accused me of using cocaine.  A stern scene followed, with both parents perched ram-rod straight in their armchairs, while I was subjected to a heated inquisition. Where had I bought it, and who from? Didn't I know such things led to death and doom? I struggled to decipher their bewildering accusations, until Mum blurted out, "I read it in your diary!" To find my diary, Mum would first have had to rummage through my dressing table, obviously when I wasn't around to protest. Her intrusion on my privacy was assumed by both parents to be acceptable, and now, with this handwritten c...
